[Cashless restaurant opens] -Lesson 5 / English in Today's World-
A new type of restaurant that has opened n central Tokyo may provide a solution to the growing labor shortage in the industry. It does not accept cash payments.
The company that operates family restaurant chain Royal Host opened the new diner on a trial basis. Unlike many other countries, in Japan cash is still king, so the restaurant is quite a novelty.
Customers order meals at their table, using a tablet computer. They can pay only with a credit card or one of 14 forms of electronic money.
One customer says she is comfortable with not being able to pay in cash. "It takes a lot of effort to get out my purse when I'm carrying a small child. So the new system is easy and convenient."
The cashless system eliminates the need for a cash register. No employees are needed to count out paper money and coins or to operate the register. The system enables the staff to quickly tally day-to-day sales, a time consuming process at conventional restaurants. (2017/11/7, NHK World)
