A Japanese director has won the top honor at the Cannes Film Festival. Hirokazu Koreeda took the prestigious Palme d'Or for his film "Shoplifters." He's the first Japanese director to win the award in 21 years.

Koreeda was one of two Japanese directors competing in the 71st installment of the festival. It wasn't the first time he'd come away with a trophy from Cannes. In 2013, he picked up the Jury Prize for his film "Like Father, Like Son."

"Shoplifters" is a story about family ties. It focuses on a Tokyo family living on pension benefits and shows them having to resort to shoplifting.

The director thanked his collaborators.
