〇現代英語　Lesson2 :John Lennon’s Angry Letter Sold for $30,000（１）
ジョン・レノンの怒りの手紙　3万ドルで売れる
An angry letter that the late John Lennon wrote has been sold for nearly 30,000 dollars. A collector in Texas bought the letter, a two page draft, at an auction.
Lennon was writing to Paul McCartney and his wife, Linda.
Lennon is believed to have written it in 1971. The break-up of the Beatles was made public the previous year. The auction house says the letter shows the bitter conformation between Lennon and McCartney over the band’s sprit.
Lennon wrote: “Do you really think most of today’s art came about because of the Beatles? I don’t you’re insane. …Get off your high horse!” This was written in response to a letter from Linda. She had criticized Lennon for not openly announcing his departure from the Beatles.
Lennon shares his side of the story. “ About not telling anyone that I left the Beatles. Paul and Klein both spent the day persuading me it was better not to say anything.”
The Beatles’ hits include “I want to Hold Your Hand” and “ Yesterday.”

(1) 前後のコンマは、カッコと同じ
A collector in Texas bought the letter, a two page draft, at an auction.
➮テキサス州の収集家が、競売でこの手紙（２ページの下書き）を買ったものです。
（解説）the letter, a two-page draft, …と２つのコンマがあります。これは、the letter( a two-page draft)と同じ意味ですが、英語ではカッコを日本語ほど使わず、前後2つのコンマで表記するのが一般的です。このような場合、the letter と a two-page draft は「同格」関係にあります。the letter（この手紙）を具体的に説明すると、a two-page draft(2ページにわたって書かれた下書き)なのです。本来はthe letter, which is a two-page draft,…を略したものなので、前後にコンマが必要となります。しかし実際の英語では、後ろのコンマは省略されることもあります。

(2) 英語は同じ単語の繰り返しを嫌う

(解説)最初の文ではビートルズの「解散」としてbreak-upと言っていますが、次の文ではsplitとなっています。これは全く同じ意味です。英語では、同じ単語を繰り返して使うことを嫌います。

◆Grammar
彼らはもうだいたい50年くらいここにいます。
They've been here for almost 50 years now.
☑過去のある時から今まで何かがずっと続いている状態を表すとき、動詞には「have＋過去分詞」の現在完了形を使います。この使い方を現在完了形の「継続」用法といいます。
☑for…(～の間）やsince…(～から、～以来）などの期間を表す語句が、現在完了形が「継続」（ずっと～です）の意味であることの目印になります。
例）My family has lived in this town since 2009.

＊2009年からこちらにいます。
