■ビジネス英語Interview Leonard Slatkin 1-前半
リスニングポイント
1Why does Mr. Slatkin describe his job as a “silent profession”?
2What does Mr. Slatkin consider important when conducting?
Shibata:
So Maestro, first of all you've been conducting for more than 60 years now. Could you briefly tell us about what you call your “baton-wielding journey” so far?
*baton-wielding journey 指揮棒を振る人生
Leonard Slatkin:
Just as the violinist has a violin to play.
I suppose you could say that the conductor plays the orchestra.
But really our instrument is just a stick.
It's what we hold on to.
It's what the orchestra uses to see the gesture that conductor makes, and showing expression of the music.
In a way, it's a silent profession because the stick doesn't make a sound.
And yet at the same time, it can produce this incredible world of sound from anywhere, say, 8 musicians, sometimes 120 depends on program.
I've been doing this for a long time.
And I don't get tired of it.
It's not about control.
For me, it's about collaboration.
When I work with the orchestra, I try to show with my gestures of the stick, of my body, my face what I believe is in the music.
That's how I communicate to them.
It's not about words I use.
It's about how I feel about the music.
And the stick is the instrument through which I show that.
Shibata:
The stick is the magic for you.
Leonard Slatkin:
A little but.
こたえ
1 Because the stick doesn't make a sound.
2He thinks how he feels about the music is important.

■ 現代英語 ICC issues arrest warrant for Russian president Putin
(国際刑事裁判所がロシアのプーチン大統領に逮捕状を発効)
The International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin, but legal expert says the warrant's execution appears unlikely.
Putin is suspected of conducting the unlawful deportation and transfer of children to Russia from occupied areas of Ukraine.
Speaking at The Hague on Friday, the ICC president says children have special protection under international law.
“The judges have reviewed the information and evidence submitted by procecutor and determined that there are credible allegations against these persons for alleged crimes.”
The ICC also issued a warrant for a senior official in the Russian presidential office in charge of children's rights.
As Russia does not recognize the court's jurisdiction, a former ICC judge says it's impossible to imagine Moscow handing over Putin to the court, but the arrest warrant will have an impact.
