〇現代英語　Lesson 14 　Study to Regenerate Spinal Cords with iPS Cells　Part1

Japanese reserchers say they may be on the verge of a breakthrough that could change the lives of millions of people living with paralysis.
The team hopes to regenerate damaged spinal cords using human stem cells. Stem cells can repair and replace tissue in the body.
Scientists at Keio University have asked its ethics committee for approval of their study, which will involve tests on humans. They plan to use induced pluripotent stem cells, known as iPS cells, to create nerve tissue.
They would then transplant the tissue into seven adults with spinal cord injuries. The reserchers hope the technique can restore movements in paralyzed limbs.
The patients also have high hopes.
A 24-year-old man suffered a severe spinal injury in a traffic accident two years ago. He is paralyzed from the chest down. "I want the treatment as soon as it’s approved,” he said. "I want to be able to stand up and walk--like I used to. "

◆Things You Should Know
(1) spinal cord (脊髄)の理解
➮人間を含む脊椎動物にはspine(背骨、脊柱）があります。この「spineの中を通るcord」つまり「背骨の中を通るひも」状の組織が、spinal cord(脊髄）です。
(2) tissueの意味
➮tissueはもともと「薄い織物」「薄い布」という意味で、転じて動植物の細胞の「組織」を指すようになりました。組織の中ではたくさんの細胞がずっと並んでつながっていることを考えると、織物に似ていると思います。
(3) chestとはどこを指すか
➮日本語の「胸」に対応する英語はいくつかあります。chestは人体の「胸部」「胸」を指します。女性の胸の場合はbreastという言葉がありますが、これは片方ずつの「乳房」を指すことが多い。通常はbreastsと複数形で使います。さらに「胸」回りのサイズとしての「胸」は男性と子どもはchest、女性はbustです。
　また、日本語の「胸」には、「胸を弾ませる」といった表現に見られるように人の「気持ち」という意味がありますが、この場合の「胸」に対応する英語はbosomが使われることがあります。

「iPS」の意味を解読
iPS細胞とはinduced pluripotent stem cell (人工多能性幹細胞）のことです。この名称は京大の山中伸弥教授が考えました。詳しくみると「人間にとってinduced(誘発されて）作られた、pluripotent（多くの能力がある）、stem cell（幹細胞）」です。Stem cell のstemとは植物の「茎」のことで、茎から分かれて植物のいろいろな部分が育っていくように「体のさまざまな組織へと育っていく細胞」というイメージがあります。
　iPS細胞の性質はpluripotent（多能性）です。「plural(複数の、多くの）種類の細胞へ分化を起こすpotential（可能性）を持っている」といった意味です。人間がinduced (
誘発した）の部分は、要するに人工ということです。

Harvey told the hula teacher that he is the world's worst dancer, but the teacher didn't think he would get in the way. He followed her lead.
