The memory of the morning of Aug. 6, 1945, must never fade.
1945年8月6日の朝の記憶を決して薄れさせてはなりません
Technological progress without an equivalent progress in human institutions can doom us. The scientific revolution that led to the splitting of an atom requires a moral revolution as well.
That is why we come to this place. We stand here in the middle of this city and force ourselves to imagine the moment the bomb fell. We force ourselves to feel the dread of children confused by what they see. We listen to a silent cry. We remember all the innocents killed across the arc of that terrible war and the wars that came before and the wars that would follow.
Mere words cannot give voice to such suffering. But we have a shared responsibility to look directly into the eye of history and ask what we must do differently to curb such suffering again.
Some day, the voices of the hibakusha will no longer be with us to bear witness. But the memory of the morning of Aug. 6, 1945, must never fade. That memory allows us to fight complacency. It fuels our moral imagination. It allows us to change.
技術の進歩が、人間社会に同等の進歩をもたらさないのなら、私たち人間に破滅をもたらすこともあります。原子の分裂へとつながった科学的な変革には、道徳的な変革も求められます。

いつの日か、証言する被爆者の声が私たちのもとに届かなくなるでしょう。しかし、1945年8月6日の朝の記憶を決して薄れさせてはなりません。その記憶があれば、私たちは現状肯定と戦えるのです。その記憶があれば、私たちの道徳的な想像力をかき立てるのです。その記憶があれば、変化できるのです。

〇NEWS Heat in S Asia could exceed survivable levels by 2100—study　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　南アジア、２１００年に「生存不可能レベル」の猛暑に　研究 [AFP,Aug.3]
South Asia, home to one-fifth of the world's population, could see humid heat rise to unsurvivable levels by century's end if nothing is done to halt global warming, researchers said Wednesday.
The study in the journal Science Advances warned of summer heat waves with levels of heat and humidity that exceed what humans can survive without protection.
The research is based on two climate models. One is a business-as-usual scenario in which little is done to contain climate change, and the second is aimed at limiting temperature rise to well below two degrees Celsius, as pledged by more than 190 nations under the 2015 Paris climate accord.
The study is the first of its kind to look not just at temperatures, but at the forecast of wet-bulb temperature, which combines temperature, humidity and the human body's ability to cool down in response.
The survivability threshold is considered to be 35 degrees Celsius, or 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
Under a business-as-usual scenario, wet-bulb temperatures are projected to approach the survivability threshold over most of South Asia, and exceed it at a few locations, by the end of the century, said the report.
About 30 percent of the population in the region would be exposed to these harmful temperatures, up from zero percent at present, said the report.
世界人口の5分の1が暮らす南アジア地域では、地球温暖化に歯止めをかけるための対策を何も講じなければその高気温と高湿度がさらに進み、今世紀末までに人が生存できないレベルに達する恐れがあるとする研究結果が2日（水）、発表された。
　米科学誌「サイエンス・アドバンシズ」に掲載された論文は「人が防御（手段）なしで生きられる温度と湿度の水準を超える夏の熱波」について警鐘を鳴らしている。
　米マサチューセッツ工科大学（ＭＩＴ）などの研究チームが行った今回の研究は２つの気候モデルに基づいている。一つは、気候変動を食い止めるための措置をほぼ何も講じない「成り行き（ＢＡＵ）」シナリオで、もう一つは２０１５年のパリ協定の下で世界１９０か国以上が合意した「気温上昇幅を２度未満に抑える」ことを目標とするシナリオだ。
　気温だけでなく「湿球温度」の予測を調査対象としたのは、この種の研究としては今回が初めてだ。湿球温度は、気温および湿度とそれに応じた冷却能力を組み合わせたもの。
　人が生存可能な湿球温度の限界値は３５℃と考えられている。
　論文によると、ＢＡＵシナリオの下では「今世紀末までに、湿球温度が南アジアの大半で生存限界値に近づき、いくつかの地域では限界値を超えると予測される」という。
　南アジアでこの多大な弊害をもたらす湿球温度にさらされる人口の割合は、現在の０％から約３０％にまで上昇すると、論文は指摘している。
